Confidential is a digital media organization preparing to launch in the near future. We’re a newsroom of top-flight reporters, data experts, visual journalists and editors working in collaboration to deliver an interconnected news experience. We plan to create a new, interconnected style of journalism that helps engaged and influential audiences better understand the complex stories that matter most.
The Data Visualization Reporter will tell stories with data and create clear, concise, and deep data visualizations that will help our audience understand the policies, problems and solutions that can shape our everyday lives. We're looking for a creative reporter to create distinctive visual content including maps, charts, graphs and infographics both independently and in partnership with other reporters in our newsroom.
This reporter will enter Confidential’s newsroom on the ground floor and develop how our newsroom presents data and help us stand out from the pack.
Responsibilities:
- Pitch, write, edit and report data-driven stories
- Collaborate with the newsroom to create and edit visual content including interactive maps, charts, and graphs
- Acquire, clean and analyze large data sets
- Transform data sets, statistics, quantitative and qualitative analysis into compelling visuals
- Meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Proactively identify stories for data visualization opportunities
- Creatively tackle new ways to present data
- Must be an expert in ability to collect, research, and analyze data from a wide variety of sources
Qualifications:
- A passion for data-driven, visual and written storytelling
- Proficient or working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and/or Ruby
- Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects) and/or other visualization tools
- Expertise using online data visualization tools (Datawrapper, D3) and cartographic visualization tools (Mapbox, QGis) to name a few
- A strong portfolio demonstrating ability to create compelling data visualizations
- Ability to stay organized and balance multiple projects at once
- A deep curiosity to look at data and find what is missing
- Commitment to viewing all stories through an equity lens
